Mainstream Commercial Applications

Raising Funds for Noble Causes

One of the best things about Dogecoin is its ineffable
ability to bring people together in support of humanitarian efforts.
Such was the case in the recent fundraisers for the Jamaican Bobsled Team
in the 2014 Winter Olympics and the Tana River water project in Kenya.

2014 Winter Olympics

On January 19, 2014, the Dogecoin community kickstarted a campaign to raise $50,000 for the Jamaican Bobsled Team, which had qualified for but could not afford to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

By the second day of the drive, the community had been able to bring in $36,000 worth of Dogecoin and the Dogecoin to bitcoin exchange rate had already risen by 50%. The success of the campaign also led to the support of a second Sochi athlete, Shiva Keshavan.

The Dogecoin Foundation’s own Eric Nakagawa, in partnership with the nonprofit group Charity: Water, collected donations to help build a well in the Tana river basin in Kenya. They set out to raise a total of 40,000,000 Dogecoin (valued at $30,000 at the time) before World Water Day which was scheduled on March 22.

The campaign was a big success, with collections from more than 4,000 donors including one anonymous benefactor who had generously donated 14,000,000 Dogecoin (approx. $11,000).
